Preparing School Department Heads Using National Standards: Through the Looking Glass of Leadership

Authors
L. David Weller, Jr., Ph.D., Professor of Educational Leadership, University of Georgia; Sylvia J. Weller, Ed.D., Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Barrow County GA

This is a comprehensive guide to the knowledge and skills needed by those preparing for school department leadership, as well for existing department heads seeking further professional development. All significant areas of department head leadership knowledge and skills are clearly presented in detail. The entire program is based on the leadership skills and knowledge stipulated and defined by major national educational organizations concerned with educational leadership. These areas of skill and knowledge are, in effect, national standards that must be met by school administrators. Throughout the text, each topic in administrative leadership discussed is specifically linked to the national standard to which it relates by annotations in the page margin.

Preparing School Department Heads Using National Standards:
Through the Looking Glass of Leadership
From the Authors’ Introduction

The purpose of this book is to provide a complete staff development program to develop the necessary leadership skills and knowledge for those in or aspiring to the role of department head. The program can be set up and facilitated by central office personnel or school administrators. The book can also be used by individual department heads as a means to develop on their own the skills they need to be effective in this role and in the administrative roles that are likely to follow.

The text, activities, and case studies are designed to provide an intensive course of study in leadership. As such, they are based on leadership skills and knowledge deemed essential by national organizations such as the National Policy Board for Educational Administration, the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
